These grainy images surfaced on a Chinese website just long enough for us to grab them and produce our illustrations. As well as giving a peek at the sporty exterior, they show a high-quality cabin. Ignore the MG6 badge, though – that’s just for China.

So, how has the car come about? Although NAC bought the MG brand, it’s the work of SAIC, which owns the rights to the Rover 75. After launching a facelifted 75 – the Roewe 750 – in China, the firm rolled out the 550. Both were engineered at Ricardo in Leamington Spa, Warks, by ex-MG Rover staff.

In early 2008 Roewe revised its export plans, with overseas cars going under the MG banner. The MG ZS will be the first product of this unlikeliest of allegiances.
