Here’s a new Audi that’s set to make a name for itself… via the back door. Our picture gives a first glimpse of the
A5 Sportback – a five-door evolution of the stunning A5 coupé.

Even though it’s wearing a heavy disguise, the prototype was exposed long enough for our eagle-eyed spies to capture it. Details about the Sportback model surfaced last January, but this is the first time it has been spotted out on the road. Styling changes over the current coupé include the introduction of a higher waistline, as well as a lower sloping roof.

Under the disguise, it’s likely the nose will stay the same as the standard car’s. The Sportback will be the most practical version of the A5 yet, offering five doors and a taller, more spacious cabin.

From the side, the Audi could be mistaken for a four-door coupé, while a rakish rear will differentiate it from the A4 Avant it sits above in the line-up.

Engines will be carried over from the A5 coupé. This means a wide selection, ranging from a 1.8-litre FSI base model up to a 3.2 FSI at the top of the pile. The new Sportback will be available in front-wheel drive or quattro 4WD guises when it debuts in the second half of next year.

And 2009 is set to be a busy year for the A5. Audi has just introduced an S line model, while the latest 2.0 TDI diesel is available to order now for delivery in March. Prices start from £28,485. A soft-top A5 and flagship RS5 – which is set to debut Audi’s new 4.2-litre petrol V8 – will also appear in the next 12 months.
